Peter Wildoer, Klas Ideberg and the rest of
the guys of Darkane are back again with their third full-length album and
despite the numerous side projects of the members they are still sticking
together. The band was formed as late as 1998 and already having three albums
released is highly impressive. Then again, these guys are educated musicians
who know exactly what to do and they do it really well, whether it is extreme
death / thrash metal or progressive rock music. Unfortunately their new album
"Expanding Senses" doesn't reach the same heights as their previous two
releases but they are still able to present some very enjoyable tunes. The
songs are intense, energetic and performed with technical precision as we are
used to hear. The most impressive thing about the band is still their vocalist
Andreas Sydow who is once again doing a superb job behind the mic. The only
thing that bothers me is that the band have joined company with most other
bands of the new Swedish wave of death / thrash metal. After a few very
impressive releases in the late 90's the genre have come to a stand-still
with recycled riffs and standard formulas becoming more and more common. The
only band who have been able to live up to the expectations I've had on them
so far is The Haunted. This happens to most genres but it is not often this
apparent. "Expanding Senses" is however a very good album that does not
suffer from any major flaws and I don't think it should disappoint fans of
the band. Stand-out tracks: "Violence From Within", "Parasites Of The
Unexplained".
