REVIEW: Darkane - Layers Of Lies Nuclear Blast, 2005
9/10
Darkane - Layers Of Lies - cover art Fans of Darkane have had to wait three years for this follow-up to their 2002 album "Expanding Senses". In my opinion it was a wise choice to take the time and focus after having slightly lost track after the excellent and very intense "Insanity". The band's unique take on Swedish death / thrash metal has won over many fans who want something more technical, massive and progressive than the usual Gothenburg stuff. "Layers Of Lies" is release the same year as Soilwork's 6th album "Stabbing The Drama" and these two will find themselves being compared quite often I believe. While Soilwork is more straight-forward, I would like to label Darkane as the Meshuggah of Swedish death / thrash. "Layers Of Lies" is a rollercoaster where there are no straps to hold you back. You will fly free and experience a lot more than you're able to absorb from only one spin in the CD player. Darkane don't follow the herd, nor do they pick the easiest solutions. Instead they work hard to write complex and intricate music that is also memorable which is a difficult task. This is without a doubt the strongest Darkane release to this day and one of the top ten albums of the year. Some of the finest extreme metal musicians in the world have yet again proven their skills.
