REVIEW: Darkseed - Ultimate Darkness Massacre Records, 2005
8/10
Darkseed - Ultimate Darkness - cover art Darkseed is one of the leading bands from the well established gothic metal scene in Germany and many fans have been awaiting this sixth full-length album with great expectations. Being a gothic metal band and re-using the word "darkness" in an album title (they released "Diving Into Darkness" some five years ago) might not exactly do much to put a stamp labelled creative on their foreheads but that's their decision I guess. The first time I listened to this album I was very excited and was just about to herald it as one of the finest gothic metal releases of all time but once it had visited my cd player a couple of times further my attitude towards it changed slightly. I don't really know why but it seems as if the song structures and vocal lines are a little bit too similar to each other all the way through. I still enjoy the album very much, especially the first half of it as it tends to fade a little in quality, starting after the mid-section. A slight tendency of repetition is the downside of this album but there are several positive things to say about it as well. First of all, the vocals of Stefan Hertrich have hardly ever been more impressive than they are here. His semi-dark, raspy voice is simply perfect for a band like Darkseed and he is putting his gift to use very well indeed. The band has also managed to find a good balance between organic sounds and electronics. They remind me a little of latter-day Samael at times with touches of both Crematory, Sentenced and the poppier side of Theatre Of Tragedy. If you want your metal raw, dark, passionate and catchy then give the new Darkseed album a chance. It might be interesting to mention also that the track "The Fall" has been used in the PC game with the same name from Silverstyle Entertainment. A couple of songs definitely have hit potential such as "My Burden" and "The Dark One".
