It has now passed two years since I reviewed the first demo from the Swedish band Darkstone. "Dark Vengeance" is the title of their new demo which follows the debut pretty naturally. Darkstone have mixed the Manowar image with the more extreme war image of Bolt Thrower. Musically they are much closer to Bolt Thrower than Manowar and while their roots dig deep into the black / death metal soil there are also elements that remind me of the mighty Fear Factory, mainly the drumming. Their music is not very fast but mostly mid-paced with pretty conventional black / death metal vocals leading the way. Apart from a very nice intro I can't say that I was that impressed with the second demo from Darkstone either. It is not bad but the four tracks sound too much alike and the machine-like drums tend to bury all attempts of creating real songs instead of repetitive rhythms placed in a row. The reason why the chemistry of carbon has become a science of its own is that the carbon atom can bind four other atoms and also arrange itself to form double and triple bonds and gives rise to an infinite number of compounds. Diversity is very important in music as well and I think Darkstone needs to look in not only one direction but four. The band is made up of only two individuals. Perhaps it would be a good idea to bring in some new blood. They are not bad but in order to move forward and progress it seems like changes have to be done. Right now they have put themselves in the same situation as Sisyfos, one of the Greek titans, who drank water from the river Lethe to forget about life and the living and therefore was punished by always having to push a stone over the top of a mountain but never reaching the top. Well, after all, third time's a charm so let's hope for the best.
