REVIEW: Darkstone - La Matanza (EP) Self-financed, 2001
6/10
Darkstone - La Matanza (EP) - cover art Darkstone is a band from the same area in Sweden as Arch Enemy namely Halmstad on the west coast. Geographically they may be similar but they are very different when it comes to the music which is really the only thing that's important here. Darkstone has a rather unorthodox style and they have labelled themselves as being "the ultimate power blood metal band". In plain English this obviously means mid-paced atmospheric black / death metal with a strong epic feeling and some light industrial tendencies. There are also some medieval sounds but they are very subtle and not that protruding. Darkstone has obviously put both time, hard work and money into this recording and it is a very professional release from a band without label support. The songs are still a little too simple to really make an impression but this is a band that have found themselves a very distinct and unusual sound that it would be very wise to build upon. A nice and interesting recording from a band that you might want to check out if you want something different but it lacks a little bit of power and color. This is the Manowar of extreme metal as you may have guessed when looking at the cover...
