Reviewing this
album from the legendary Darkthrone is close to a redundant action of madness
but I will nevertheless do so. Those of you who like it probably regard it as
one of the early masterpieces of Norwegian black metal and the rest of you
probably couldn't care less about this worthless piece of crap. I find myself
standing somewhere inbetween these two completely opposite viewpoints. The
production is of course the worst imaginable but this is as you probably know
a deliberate choice and meant to give the music an evil and primitive edge
which it also strangely enough does. This kind of music needs that raw and
primal feeling in order to get the most out of it. "A Blaze In The Northern
Sky" fits perfectly as a landmark in the history of Norwegian black metal.
Ironically there were more things set ablaze in the next couple of years. If
you look past the murders, church arsons and the neo-nazi crap this scene gave
birth to some of the finest black metal bands ever - Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor,
Arcturus just to mention a few. Behind the fuzzy soundwalls of Darkthrone
there is an interesting unique atmosphere that has haunted and inspired
countless heirs of the black metal spirit and continues to do so. Definitely
one of the better old school black metal albums ever made. No keyboards, no
female vocals, no theatrical screams, just pure black
evil.
