'Panzerfaust' was Darkthrone's first release on Satyr Wongraven's Moonfog Productions after parting ways with English label Peaceville. This album is also significant as it would be the last album the band would make as a three-piece, before the disappearance of guitarist Zephyrous. Recorded in the band's own Necrohell Studios, the production, while still suitably grim, is somewhat clearer than that of the band's previous works. The second thing that is most noticeable is the heavy usage of riffs reminiscent of Celtic Frost (most notably on 'Triumphant Gleam' and 'Hordes Of Nebulah'), which is something of an indicator as to the direction Darkthrone would take on following albums. There is a good balance between the songs with the more 'Frost'-influenced moments and Darkthrone's more traditional minimalist blast ('En Vind av Sorg' and 'Hans Siste Vinter'), giving the album an atmosphere which distinguishes itself from everything else Darkthrone have ever done, while still clinging to the basic tenements of early black metal. The lyrics are mostly written by Fenriz (in English and Norwegian) and are more existential and abstract this time around. Varg contributes more lyrics to Darkthrone in the form of 'Quintessence', a seven-minute, Darkthrone epic which uses some of the same riffs as were used in the Storm (Fenriz's side project) song 'Noregsgard'. New territory is also explored with the synth-based outro 'Snø Og Granskog (Utferd)', which is more reminiscent of Fenriz's other side-project, Isengard. While this album isn't the best Darkthrone release, it is still a more than worthy addition to the band's catalogue.
