REVIEW: Darkthrone - Plaguewielder Moonfog Productions, 2001
8/10
Darkthrone - Plaguewielder - cover art Darkthrone and Moonfog Productions have become two of the most important entities in the entire black metal scene and "Plaguewielder", the new album from Darkthrone, is probably the most anticipated release in a long time among fans of Norwegian black metal. The atmosphere of the new album is as cold, grim and dark as ever but I am very glad that the production doesn't sound like it did on the band's early albums "Soulside Journey" and "A Blaze In The Northern Sky". I know this is a legendary album but the sound is nothing else but horrible. A lot of people will be surprised when hearing the new album because Fenriz and Nocturno Culto don't sound exactly like they used to. This time they have decided to give their old sound a polish and introduce more of a traditional metal sound which is a step in the right direction to my ears. "Plaguewielder" is probably the most complex and unusual Darkthrone album so far but don't go nuts over this. The spirit of black metal still lives within these Norwegian souls as you will see when you have a look at the lyrics (if you can hear what they're "singing" then you are a very strange human being...). This is a very good album but I am still not a diehard fan of the band but I am slowly getting there.
