Darkthrone are under the serious risk of becoming the AC/DC of black metal. His style feels repetitive, monotonous and deprived of a real evolution. This would not be a real problem if the music was really worthwhile, but the songs included in this album are mostly boring and dull. Here we have a band that seems to be stagnated in their own impersonation. Is the excess of releases (almost one per year) the reason? Perhaps, but anyway, in my opinion, Darkthrone is slowly turning out to be an average band with their name as the only weapon to convince the listener. If “Ravishing Grimness” was a great piece of raw and hostile black metal, “Plaguewielder” began to show some weaknesses, and “Hate them” was nothing but a punk black metal album that had its moments, “Sardonic Wrath” is without a shadow of doubt the worst of all Darkthrone modern albums. Some riffs are very similar to prior tunes featured in the previous LPs and the songs simply pass by without leaving a trace on the listener. The lack of feeling is considerable in tracks as “Alle Gegen Alle”. Of course one can find here and there some good things: “Straightening Sharks in Heaven” is a great song, for instance. “Man Tenker Sitt” is also good. But the overall album is boring and it has not the magic that other Darkthrone releases have. Darkthrone feel proud of this stance but I think their music is severely running out of ideas right now: when listening to “Sardonic Wrath”, it´s quite easy to feel a strong dejŕ-vu with riffs and paces already heard. Probably the band should concentrate more on create better music and forget about release a lot of albums. "Sardonic wrath" is just for fans wanting to complete their collection.
