Darkthrone are living legends among "true" black metal fans
but before they helped forming the Norwegian black metal scene with their
album "A Blaze In The Northern Sky", they were a death metal band. After
having recorded several demos they found themselves being one of the first
bands signed to the British label Peaceville Records and "Soulside Journey"
was their debut release. This was the only album before Darkthrone became
Darkthrone so to say. Fenriz and the band then had their black metal fanatic
period where they hated this album with all their hearts before finally
maturing into adults and yet again accepting the album that started it all for
them. "Soulside Journey" is basically a basic death metal record in the
Swedish vein with a strong early Entombed feeling to it although the music and
vocals are slightly harsher. Now and then some doomier sounds are unveiled
that reminds me a little of the very first releases from My Dying Bride.
Celtic Frost have apparently also made some inspirational contributions to
"Soulside Journey" which is a very enjoyable release and a very important
one in the history of extreme metal. Have you ever heard Darkthrone doing
death metal solos? No? Then you should definitely listen to this album. It may
not be unique or groundbreaking in any way, especially not by today's
standards, but it is easy to tell good musicians from bad, even if it is the
first official release from a
band.
