REVIEW: Darkthrone - Too Old, Too Cold Peaceville Records, 2006
7/10
Darkthrone - Too Old, Too Cold - cover art May everyone who ever believed that Darkthrone would release a single that would enter the national singles chart raise their hand? Very few expected this unlikely scenario to turn into reality but now the time is here when darkness is spreading across the world. I can even smell the hatred from all Satan's little helpers who possess the only real vision of what true black metal is meant to be all about. I would even go out on a limb and refer to this as a historical moment in the history of extreme metal. "Too Old, Too Cold" is not only a big fuck off to all narrow-minded black metal fanatics who were not even born when Fenriz and Nocturno Culto first picked up their instruments, it's also a big fuck off to commercialism and modern metal. The two hardened practicioners of the dark arts do their thing without caring one bit about what anyone else thinks and that is what makes them so controversial within all camps even today and it is most likely also why they have been able to maintain their cult status throughout all these years.

"Too Old, Too Cold" consists of four songs, the actual single being the clearly most impressive one with its very intense yet simple punk driven black metal. Without Motörhead there would never have been a Darkthrone and this song says it all. It embodies everything that represents Norwegian black metal - energy, raw and primitive energy and an evil stench that will leave no-one unmarked. Next follows another typical Darkthrone song called "High On Cold War" where Grutle Kjellson from Enslaved steps in for a successful guest appearance. Track three is a rather peculiar metalized version of Siouxsie and the Banshees' song " Love In A Void" which I must admit has its moments but I think I enjoy the original more. "Graveyard Slut" finishes off this single in a suitable fashion - haunting vocals, a crazy guitar solo and blasphemous lyrics providing oral pleasure for the damned. "Too Old, Too Cold" is a typical single, containing one great song and a few so and so tracks. If you're not a Darkthrone purist and collector I suggest you await the full-length album because there is certainly still a lot more to come from the dark pits of Norway.
