“Total Death” is a different album, embellished with a personal touch, but in many aspects is a typical Darkthrone release, with all those loads of blackness, stormy melodies and crushing rhythms that these Norwegians usually deliver in each release. Some dislike a lot this album and if it´s evident that “Total death” won´t become any milestone of black metal it´s able to provide several good moments to the listener. First of all, this album is quite Celtic Frost-esque in many passages. In fact, the first song has a movement that resembles a lot to a tune from Tom G. Warrior and co., but the rest are just influences -strong influences, though. However, some parts are in the vein of these frozen songs à la Darkthrone, you know, fast and steady, with solid, almost chilling, melodies, monotonous but at the same time beautiful. “Ravnajuv” is an excellent example. Also “Gather for attack on the pearly gates” is a superb tune, you can almost feel the drums kicking your heart, giving no rest. The sound of this album could be described as if the instruments were placed some feets under: distant, dark, a bit disperse, but in the end nothing unbearable taking into account that is Darkthrone the band which is being played. Of course these guys have never made great efforts concerning the sound quality... as a weird detail, the lyrics have been written by Nocturno Culto, but other people as Garm from Ulver/Arcturus, Carl Michael from Ved Buens Ende, Emperor´s Ihsahn, etc. have helped to put down the lines to be sang. One could say, once seen the evolution of the band until “Hate them”, that this album marks the change from the old style to the recent shown in albums like “Ravishing Grimness” or “Plaguewielder”. After all, a correct and respectable album that shouldn´t be missed by any Darkthrone follower.
