REVIEW: Dawnbringer - Catharsis Instinct Icarus Records, 2000
6.5/10
Dawnbringer - Catharsis Instinct - cover art The Philadelphia based Dawnbringer was first conceived in late 1995 as a one-man project by John Weston but has since then grown into a full line-up band. Except from being Americans the members of the band are also playing death metal with an unusual musical approach that reminds very much of more traditional bands like Iron Maiden and Motörhead. Generally their music is not as fast as most other American death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel but relying more on melody and rhythm, something that succeeds pretty good. There are also several acoustic interludes in their music but they don´t sound that similar to a progressive band like Opeth. It´s really hard to describe the Dawnbringer sound without getting lost in meaningless comparisons with bands they do not sound like. The fast and thrashier songs are the best on the album with "All Hell Broke Loose" and "Heart Particle" as the given masterpieces and two amazing songs that will not be forgotten. Don´t expect impressive death growls when listening to Dawnbringer because the vocals are extremely dark and deep growls that can be very hard to hear without having the lyrics in front of you. A good release from the band, not overly impressing but still worth buying if you´re a fan of melodic death/thrash metal. The album was recorded at the Audible Images Studio in late 1998 and early 1999. Dark and sinister it is and so it should be.
