REVIEW: Days Of Grace - Unio Mystica Self-financed, 2004
6/10
Days Of Grace - Unio Mystica - cover art Are you one of those who have realized that Machine Head's debut album revolutionized the whole metal scene? If not then you're wrong, period, go dig a whole in the ground and take your Darkthrone or Helloween albums with you. That was not my point actually but there you have it. I can't help but wonder if it's a smart move to have a band name that rhymes? To me it sounds kind of silly and that is not an impression I got from the music this German band present on this self-financed full-length album. These eleven songs are really heavy and they have spent quite some money on making it sound that way. The production is way above average demo material which is good because this kind of music really benefits from a proper sound adjustment. I was hoping for a lot from these Germans after listening to the rock heavy rhythms thrusted by my speakers in the opening of "Stuck State" which is probably my favorite off this album as well. Unfortunately they did not quite live up to my early expectations. Yes, they are heavy, yes, they can play, yes, they have a pretty good vocalist and yes, they are doing just about everything right except for perhaps that the most important factors are missing - creative song writing and a personal touch. There are no surprises, no side tracks, no experiments, nothing that breaks away from the norm. "Unio Mystica" is far from bad but it does not offer much to a listener who has had a fair share of metalcore.
