REVIEW: Dead Jesus - When Your Soul Is The Sickness Self-financed, 2000
7.5/10
Dead Jesus - When Your Soul Is The Sickness - cover art Out of Edmonton, Dead Jesus is one of many bands in the growing Alberta metal scene. Their sound is mainly a chugging mid-paced death machine in the vein of Jungle Rot, but they build upon this basis with many other nuances and influences. I hear a lot of Incantation and Death in their riffs, especially on tracks like "Grandchild of the Ovenmaster" and "Eulogy". There are also a lot of atmospheric picking breaks, courtesy of guitarist Glen and bassist Andy, who work well together to fill up the sound on tracks like "A.F." What is almost a Six Feet Under groove dominates during songs like "Hymns of the Unholy" and the closer "Mortuary", carried by the ultra tight old-school drumming of Azmiron, who mixes blast beats, shit-kicking double bass runs and thrash beats to perfection. The production of this album is of the highest quality, allowing every little bass line and cymbal swell to peek its head up near the top of the mix; and everything is wrapped up into a really nice looking package which is well worth checking out.
