REVIEW: Dead Pad - [demo cd] Self-financed, 2002
8.5/10
Dead Pad - [demo cd] - cover art Dead Pad is a new British band that rose from the ashes of another band called Reign from South Shields (no idea where it is but those of you who live there probably do...). They consist of Mick Storrie (guitars, programming), John Cook (bass, vocals) and the female lead vocalist Betty Rogers. Rather boring and common names you may think but their music is luckily far from boring. While the nu-metal scene (I am hereby including all genres like aggrocore, metalcore and whatever you wish to call it) is full of boring bands who do nothing but try to please the major labels and get some easy airplay just to disappear when the label wants to follow a new trend there are some who stand out. Dead Pad is one of them and the three tracks on this demo recording are, except for the amazing production, full of aggressive yet groovy and melodic riffs also garnished with the wonderful vocals from Betty. She fits the music of Dead Pad like a glove on a human hand (with five fingers of course...) and knows exactly how to use her voice to make it follow the atmosphere of the moment. Sometimes she even reminds me a little of the Skunk Anansie (R.I.P.) vocalist at her best while at other times she sounds like the vocalists of The Provenance or Amaran. The male vocals do not sound that good unfortunately but they are still necessary to create some sort of contrast. I probably risk sounding foolish and easy-charmed when writing a review like this but it is simply because of the fact that this is without a single trace of doubt the best demo I have heard so far this year. If Dead Pad does not start receiving offers from labels soon there is something sincerely wrong with this world. Recommended to every fan of good music in general, especially if industrial aggro-metal is something you fancy.
