REVIEW: Dead Soul Tribe - Dead Soul Tribe Inside Out Music, 2002
7/10
Dead Soul Tribe - Dead Soul Tribe - cover art Some of you who are familiar with the history of metal probably know of the American band Psychotic Waltz who was one of the pioneers on the progressive metal field during the 1990's. The band more or less dissolved in 1998 but the members have not entirely left the music business. Dead Soul Tribe is the new band of the former vocalist Buddy Lackey who now goes under the alter ego of Devon Graves and now living in Austria. Together with drummer Adel Moustafa, bass player Roland Ivenz and rhythm guitarist Volker Wilschko he keeps on delving deep into the inner core of progressive metal. Despite the fact that a couple of his new band mates have a background in the Austrian punk scene this album breathes progmetal and only progmetal (well, a little bit of love ballads too) which I am very glad about. While Devon was a member of Psychotic Waltz he didn't get a chance to play the guitar but now that he makes his own decisions he delivers some crushing riffs to the world and also plays some flute. This is a nice solid release with music that flows by smoothly but I would have loved to see a little more power or speed. Even though there are no bad tracks here there are no tracks that clearly stand out from the others either but the chorus of "Once" is a beautiful one (I know I'm a softie...). A good solid and personal release but I still prefer the amazing work he did with Psychotic Waltz.
