First album from the legends in death metal, fittingly dubbed “Death”. Primary, intense, rocky and unrelenting, one could name without any kind of doubt this album as a milestone of the genre. Developing the aggressive guttural voice, the pounding drums, and the guitarwork that defines death metal, “Scream bloody gore” is an album that no one into metal should have missed or ignored. Despite its naivety, plainly evident in several passages as loose drums breaks (performed by Autopsy drummer Chris Reifert, straight and uncompromising), the experience of listening this album is absolutely unforgettable. The songs are so good and inspired that we leave aside the immatureness, possible mistakes, limited sound quality and other annoying things that we would find out in other cases. “Scream bloody gore” does nothing but take us to another age where Slayer was the utmost when it came to heaviness and brutality; where “another step further in aggression” was a concept rarely regarded as factible. But then Chuck appeared to contribute with his music to transform the scene, helping to give life to that beast called death metal, together with other acts as Autopsy or Possessed.
“Scream bloody gore” is, if a further analysis is carried out, an evolved form of speed metal with hell-out-of-throat vocals, as if Kreator and Slayer joined in an unholy union and their music was distorted and fastened; another spin of the screw. If we don´t care about flippant dissections of the music, nevermind; you´re going to find fast songs where guitars literally fly; gloomy mid-tempos; a steady rhythm helped by the simple paces used (drums aren´t complex at all); lyrics about the American concept of horror, namely zombies, blood, guts and so on; Chuck Schuldiner singing as if each verse meant a death scream in a strict sense. Immortal songs as “Evil dead”, “Mutilation”, “Baptized in blood” or “Scream bloody gore” must not be ignored. Listen to this album –re-issued in 1999 with four bonus tracks- and honour Chuck wherever he is right now.
