Gore-laden death metal from Finland is the order of the day here. The usual gore metal influences from Carcass (dual vocal delivery) and so forth can be heard here, but there are also generous helpings of grindcore and just plain old mid paced American style death metal. Death du Jour’s version of gore metal is played with a certain, deliberate sloppiness that reminds me of similar styled American death metal bands such as Incantation. As far as the grindcore influence is concerned, the band that leaps immediately to mind is Ireland’s Abaddon Incarnate. The guitar sound and vocal delivery is similar. In addition, a lot of the songs have that disjointed feel that works quite well. Not many bands can pull that off very effectively, but Death du Jour succeeds.
Many gore bands today, such as Impaled and Gorerotted, pile on heavy doses of humor. Of course, this is not surprising considering the subject manner. Death du Jour, however, decidedly portrays a much darker, sinister feel to the subject matter. The lyrics are delivered without the subtle tongue in cheek style and humor of the aforementioned bands, the music is darker, samples are few and bleak, and the album’s conceptual layout is disturbing. The artwork (photography) has a bleak feel to it, and there are no goofy cartoon drawings to be found anywhere.
Overall, Death du Jour successfully manages to distinguish itself from the gore metal pack, and deliver a furiously dark, gore metal assault that fans of the genre will certainly appreciate. Well done.
