REVIEW: Death Warrant - Hate Infected Mind self-released, 2008
6/10
Death Warrant - Hate Infected Mind - cover art Melodic death metal once more, although this one definitely comes from a slightly more aggro and ‘core side of things. Starts with a naff intro (suitably titled "Noise"), but hits the ground running with the pummeling “Sweet Cyanide” and reeeally gets going with the expansive, near-brilliant “Betrayed.” It’s about that point when I realize that my ears are smarting from the absolutely pitiful guitar mix, which sounds like The Haunted if they recorded in a studio filled to the brim with hornets and bees. Suffice to say, the distracting buzz conspires to undo both the aggression of these songs but quick. Solid ideas all around, some of which could stand an editorial tweaking here and there (and a tendency to use less quasi-ambient intros/interludes/etc.), but overall a fine opening salvo from Irish ruffians mixing Swedish things up with a bit of Fear Factory and Terror. But really, how many more people might have been flattened if this one had just opened with “Sweet Cyanide?” The mind boggles.
