REVIEW: Deathwitch - Deathfuck Rituals Hellspawn Records, 2002
7/10
Deathwitch - Deathfuck Rituals - cover art Deathwitch is a band that features prominent veterans from the extreme metal scene of Gothenburg and this is actually their fifth album so far. They have now left their old label Necropolis Records in favor of Hellspawn, owned by the former Dark Funeral member and founder David Parland. This album has all that you would expect from a band like this - silly satanic lyrics, devilish guitar riffs and growls from the abyss. Inspired by classic bands like Bathory, old Tiamat, Sodom and Sarcofago they have found their own style which is a primitive, brutal form of thrash metal with strong black metal influences (do you know of a band called Dark Funeral...?). This is primal, down to the basics extreme metal that should be candy for fans of the old school. Deathwitch are determined to keep the spirit of the ancient ones alive and they are doing a fine job so far. This album does by no means come off as original or groundbreaking but it is well executed, fully enjoyable and professionally produced extreme metal from the musical goldmine that is Sweden today. You have to look past the lousy (= creepy) intro / outro and lyrics though and look upon the latter with a sense of preadolescent humour in mind. Stand-out tracks: "Deathfuck Rituals", "Evil Fertilizer".
