REVIEW: Debauchery - Kill Maim Burn MDD Records, 2003
7/10
Debauchery - Kill Maim Burn - cover art Debauchery is a young band playing true death metal without many ornaments. They come from Germany, they´ve toured with bands like Napalm Death, Sabbat, Hate Plow and Rotten Sound, and this is their debut album, that they released after some line-up changes and various problems. While brutal death metal, in the last two or three years, seems to have experienced a certain revival phenomenon, these guys still trust the primeval way of grunts and killer riffs, personified in the style of Bolt Thrower, Carnage, Grave etc. I mean, neither blastbeats / maniac speedy parts nor a mega-distorted voice through effects; this is nothing but heaviness and cruelty made music. Anyway, the band that comes to mind when listening to Debauchery is Six Feet Under. But take it easy, Debauchery are much more entertaining than the ultra-boring American guys led by mr. Barnes. Also Unleashed could be a similar band if we start a quest for references in the death metal performed by these Teutonic guys, except for the voice, since Thomas way of singing is more brutal and aggressive. The same as Unleashed, they are interested in slow or mid-tempo paced songs, underlining the crunchy riffs and trying to maintain the bloodshed throughout the CD, for the lyrics are mainly about blood and war. Some lyrics even resemble Cannibal Corpse and things like that, but musically Debauchery are far away from the brutal posse, despite they´re heavy, strong and bloody (especially bloody, they´re kind of a soundtrack for a slaughterhouse´s daily work!). Strangely enough, one must say there´s a song based on "Lord Of The Rings", called "The Fall Of Gondolin", something that often seemed to be a restricted lyrical area for black metal or heavy metal bands, but Debauchery isn´t a typical band. How many German death metal bands do you know for example? Production is effective and correct, supporting the music: straight forward, simple and death metal. The third song "Hordes Of Chaos" is a good token of this; slow, heavy, pounding, whereas "Insane Human Butchery" is more complex, varied and brutal, possibly the best song in the album. It´s clear that they feel great playing death metal, and that´s the most important thing to reach good results, to feel the music. Hopefully they´ll achieve the always wished stability, and their future plans are promising. Let´s wait for the second album.
