REVIEW: Deeds Of Flesh - Reduced To Ashes Unique Leader Records, 2003
8/10
Deeds Of Flesh - Reduced To Ashes - cover art Good ol' Deeds returns like some rugged and familiar guard dog: reliable, consistent and strong. "Mark of the Legion" was their last offering, and a great one it was. This new album consists of 8 long tracks, one of which clocks in at over 10 minutes, a feat not easily achieved in brutal death metal. Erik's trademark riffing is in fine form, combining whirring melodies with muted chunk scales and setting DOF above their peers with memorable songs, exemplified in "Infested Beneath the Earth" and "Disinterred Archaic Heap". Drummer Mike Hamilton mixes the brutish combination of 16th note snare/8th note cymbal blasts on "Banished", which seemed to be the best track upon first inspection, with some hi-hat spice, reviving a percussive flair not seen in a few years around the Deeds camp. His snare is somewhat piercing, a trait that always seems to add excitement to death metal, though it was tough to tell if this was due to head tuning, technique, equipment or some combination of the three. As with all Deeds of Flesh albums, this is brutal, fast and technical: truly the prototype second wave of American death metal sound.
