REVIEW: Deforge - Freedom Release Self-financed, 2003
6/10
Deforge - Freedom Release - cover art This Italian band was originally known under the monicker Anonima Disastri since its inception back in 1997 but in 2002 they changed their name to Deforge. Back then they were mainly influenced by bands like Sepultura and Slayer. These influences still live within the band because their music is built on massive thrash metal riffing but it also comes with a brutal edge from death metal. The album begins with the crushing opening riffs of "Vicious Circle", promising a plesant ride for the next 30 minutes of this third recording from the band. Unfortunately this potentially pleasant ride became less pleasant as soon as I heard the vocalist of the band. His voice is very raw and unpolished and he doesn't use it that well but if you are able to ignore the vocals (very hard it is though) this album is quite enjoyable. To the earlier influences of the band we can now add Swedish death / thrash metal acts but while the Swedish bands are generally more focused on melodies, Deforge are more brutal and technical. If only the vocals could be improved in some way these Italians could step up to the next level.
