REVIEW: Deformity - Superior Displeased Records, 2002
7.5/10
Deformity - Superior - cover art This is my trial run with Belgium's Deformity and it's a pretty good one. A lot of Cannibal Corpse comes through from these 4 guys, from the vocals of Christopher Wolff, to the "Vile"-like tapping riffs of "Raven". Melodic elements rear their heads in a cool break in "Dawn Of Omega", and again on "Vassago". There is even some Morbid Angel to be heard on the crushing "Samslaysman", which then moves into some Swedish guitar work and back over to the Cannibal stuff. I really wanted to go out and bludgeon a passer-by with a lead pipe after hearing the half-note chunk over blast section in "Daylight Bleeding", but I don't think Displeased Records would pick up my legal tab, or that the band would testify on my behalf at the trial. Elements of the newer death metal bands are also apparent in the sweeped harmonic riff during "Eden is Burning", so don't listen to anyone who says that Deformity are just another Cannibal clone death metal band. While their experimentations may be similar to what some other band are doing, these guys have still got a lot of great music here, and I can see myself listening to this quite a bit in the coming years. Favorite tracks: "Raven", "Daylight Bleeding", "Eden Is Burning".
