Deicide is one of the most controversial metal bands in the
world but they are also very unique. Not only were they among the early death
metal bands of the Tampa Bay area who managed to survive throughout the whole
90's but they have also had the same line-up since they started out as Amon
back in 1987. "Once Upon The Cross" shows a heavier Deicide than on their
previous releases and it also benefits from a better production thanks to
Scott Burns at the (in)famous Morrisound studios. From the opening title track
you know that this is Deicide - the anti-christian and primitively satanic
lyrics, the soaring guitar solos, the impressive guitar work from the Hoffman
brothers, the powerful drumming from Steve Asheim and on top of this the
mighty growls from Glen Benton himself. Benton is infact doing some of his
best vocals ever on this album and even though the band has become somewhat of
a parody on itself lately, especially to metal fans who are not that much into
death metal or Deicide in particular, they did make some of the best albums
ever produced by this genre and "Once Upon The Cross" is without a doubt one
of them. If you consider yourself a fan of death metal and don't know of
Deicide yet then you have some serious catching up to do. In that case this
album is a good start. Even though it isn't as impressive as their earlier
material it is more accessible and comes with a sharper and clearer
production. A little short but Deicide have never bothered making long
songs.
