REVIEW: Deicide - Stench Of Redemption Earache Records, 2006
7.5/10
Deicide - Stench Of Redemption - cover art Some steps forward have been taken since 2004’s Scars of the Crucifix. The Hoffmans have been replaced with two men with equal experience, crackerjack Ralph Santolla and ex-CC shredder Jack Owen. Bringing some freshening vibes along, their contribution to Deicide’s pummeling death metal occurs as a “smooth” drive through the album, referring in no way to the music itself but rather boosting the impact that we’re dealing with professionals here. Careful ears might even notice a couple of Cannibal Corpse-ish guitar harmonies (“Never to Be Seen Again”). Other than that, the album sounds like Deicide, but is more than just a follower to Scars of the Crucifix.

The music is as relentless as before and even though the listener’s being treated with some occasional melodies, they actually fit in the songs so perfectly that it takes a while to figure out why the album feels just so damn brutal (“Not of This Earth” as a good example). The closing track (“The Lords Sedition”) cunningly makes you think that also this band wants to end the album with the cheesy trick of putting an instrumental in the end. Well, not too long from that the song steroid-kicks you in the ass leaving one of the album’s fastest parts in the very end. However, the straightforwardness begins to numb out your ears at some point, which means that – as controversial as it sounds - a couple of technical hooks could have made this album a bit easier to listen to.
