REVIEW: Demilich - Nespithe No Fashion Records, 1993
7/10
Demilich - Nespithe - cover art When I listened to Demilich’s Nespithe the first thing I took an interest in were the extremely low death vocals which are unimaginably recorded without digital assistance. They certainly make an interesting addition to this album, however it isn’t long before the novelty wears off and they become fairly annoying and repetitive. When listening to this record you can tell that as a whole the band is fairly competent with their instruments, yet they still manage to create songs that while not sounding like one another reach moments of repetition that may have you reaching for the skip track button. There are progressive and technical elements to their music that are executed fairly well. The production is not horrific but it is more along the lines of Carcass’s Symphonies of Sickness than Behemoth’s Demigod. To sum up this review I believe that with this release the band showed that they had great potential (It is too bad the band split in 1994) and that they were a reasonably unique death metal band, but in the end repetition vocally and instrumentally (particularly vocally) has a tendency to dominate this record. There were no real standout moments (you should however take notice of the odd and obscenely long song names) but I believe this is a cd that is worth at the very least a couple of listens.
