Denial Fiend is a band comprised of some seasoned Metal veterans, most notable among them Barney "Kam" Lee (ex-Death, Massacre) and Terry Butler (of the same two bands, as well as Six Feet Under). So what do they have in store on their debut album They Rise? Unfortunately not much. The album is actually quite laughable. Oh, sure, the virtual Death Metal tribute to The Misfits is not missed, certainly not. That much is painfully obvious from the song titles, some lyrics, and the chant-along "whoa-o-o" phrases. Hey, The Misfits are cool.
So what exactly is wrong with this otherwise almost serviceable record? Well, Lee just takes himself way too seriously while apparently trying to have fun. Why else would he refer to himself as a "vokillist," right? It's almost sad, really. Anyhow, that the guys have bastardized Chuck Schuldiner's "Legion of Doom" (or "Legions of Doom," depending on the demo version)--back from his Mantas, pre-Death days--is not laudable, even if Lee was in the band at that time and may claim writing credit. It is profoundly sad, particularly in light of Lee and Butler's outright disrespect of Schuldiner. ...But that's a history lesson to be found online somewhere else. Suffice to say Denial Fiend's They Rise should be allowed to sink back into the mire from which it came as there is little to redeem it from "also-ran" status.
