REVIEW: Deranged - Plainfield Cemetary Listenable Records, 2002
7.5/10
Deranged - Plainfield Cemetary - cover art Believe it or not, this is the 5th recording by Swedish trio Deranged, and their 4th for Listenable. If thses guys had taken up painting instead of music, their art would probably be known for its consistently heavy use of the color red. Similarly, Deranged's brand of death/grind is a tidal wave of blast beats, vomit-inducing guitar riffs and 8th note gurgle-growls, largely uninteruppted by anything else. It doesn't sound as if a click track was used to lay the drum tracks down, and thus a real sense of urgency and excitement prevails. "We Lure and Abduct" is the metal song equivalent to a smorgasbord, with enough riffs and changes to satiate all metal appetites. Deranged throw in a nice breakdown tease on "God is Dead", lulling you into the illusion of safety before unloading some blazing solos, then throwing in the previously expected slow parts near the end. You want it fast and sick? You want Deranged.
