REVIEW: Deride - First Round Knockout The Music Cartel, 2002
6/10
Deride - First Round Knockout - cover art Deride is a band from Bergen, Norway, that features the Necrophagia and Wurdulak member Frediablo on vocals. Influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Pantera, Slipknot and Faith No More you might expect this band to sound quite different from the previously mentioned ones and that is also the case. The main foundation of Deride's music is built of standardized Pantera riffing and hardcore-ish vocals. Sometimes they sound like a bad Pantera copy which is not very good. Pantera is a great band, no doubt about that, but there is only one band who can do what they do and sound interesting. If you really think about it their music is actually rather monotonous and boring but they still manage to come off as intrigueing and energetic in some mysterious way. This is unfortunately not the case with Deride. They are not bad at all but when you reach the end of the cd it feels as if you have been listening to one song for too long. A mature, well-played and structured second album from the band but far from being an album that will make me jump up and down while banging my head to the beat (especially since I never to that...). Stand-out track: the one that didn't sound like the others if there would have been one...
