Desire is one of many bands who have taken
upon themselves the mission to continue the tradition of death / doom metal
that Theatre Of Tragedy started in the early to mid 90's. This Portuguese
band was actually formed as early as July 1992 and have previously released
one mini album and one full-length album through their native label Skyfall
Records. Desire has actually opened up for Cradle Of Filth when they visited
Portugal on their "Dusk And Her Embrace" tour and this is one of the most
obvious musical influences that can be traced in the music of Desire. Another
one is the early sound of Theatre Of Tragedy and at times the growler sounds
very much like Raymond did back then. Desire does however not use any female
vocals except for a few spoken words. The vocals are generally of two kinds -
first the dark growling that is actually very well done and then some kind of
black screeches that they could do without because they don't sound too good.
Lyrically the band's influences shine through even clearer but their tales of
darkness, despair and passion are not on the same level as bands like CoF or
ToT. The band apparently wants to come off as being romantic and to some
degree they have managed to create the atmosphere of love. Unfortunately it is
only the atmosphere and growling that are interesting on this album. The
lyrics and the music are rather stereotypical and do not excite me very much.
A decent album but only recommended for hardcore fans of atmospheric doom
metal.
