REVIEW: Destinity - In Excelsis Dementia Adipocere Records, 2004
7/10
Destinity - In Excelsis Dementia - cover art While the previous album from the French veterans Destinity was very much a standard, albeit well produced, Dimmu Borgir affair I was a lot more impressed this time. On "In Excelsis Dementia" the band has allowed themselves to work with different musical influences and they have managed to include death metal riffs and vocals in just the right places. Gregorian chanting doesn't exactly come off bad in my book either. I must admit that I usually become very skeptic when a label markets one of their bands as influenced by Dimmu Borgir as at least three out of four of these bands have very little to offer except for left-over Dimmu Borgir riffs coupled with badly composed keyboard arrangements. This is why I was very happy when I heard what Destinity had managed to do with their third full-length album (fourth if you include a self-financed debut). You should be aware of the fact that Adipocere is pretty much an underground label which means that this album comes with a rawer production then let's say your average Nuclear Blast release. If you know that you prefer a sound with more feeling and atmosphere in it then Nuclear Blast often fail to deliver the goods and this is what labels like Adipocere are for. When their bands succeed they do it really well. This is a very nice mix of Morbid Angel death and Dimmu Borgir / mid-period Cradle Of Filth metal that should please many of you who dwell in the underground. Definitely the best and most diverse material these French people have produced so far in their career. More black than death still and that is the way it should be I think. If you live in France be sure to check them out on tour in the autumn.
