REVIEW: Destro, the - As The Coil Unwinds Metal Blade Records, 2007
7/10
Destro, the - As The Coil Unwinds - cover art The Destro's full length is finally out, after only releasing two EPs in the past. After changing their name in 2003, the band seemed poised to take the world by storm. But, will they?

As The Coil Unwinds is a well done blend of groove and death metal with a very tight sound from start to end. Granted it may not be one of the best death metal albums out there, it's hard to say it doesn't rank up high. The drums are perfectly executed and the main driving force on the CD, as well as vocals that perfectly fit the low and evil sounding guitar riffs.

The only real downfall with the release is that the songs just aren't that fast. It doesn't involve any two-step drum kicks or breakdowns, which may just be what this CD needs given the speed of the songs. There really isn't a lot to mosh to with your friends outside of a concert venue. Once in a while you'll get some quick moving music and blast beats to saturate you need to fast, death oriented metal, but that's about it.

Alright, so even though the songs are definitely on the slow side, it doesn't really matter much. You'll feel the need for speed, but quickly come to terms with the groove aspect of this release. Though the urge for said increase will be in the back of your mind the whole time. Other then that, it's a tight sounding CD that can only be described musically as "Heavy as [insert obscenity here]!" which seems to be rare anymore.
