While the debut EP from Destruction was one of the real
highlights of the 80's metal scene, their first full-length album didn't
really make the same impression on me. It is still a very good album and they
have maintained the speed and technical riffing from the EP but some of the
aggression has been lost. The vocals from Schmier are less raw and more
restricted than earlier on. It almost seems as if they had been tamed by the
record company and I wouldn't be surprised if this was actually what
happened. There are still some wonderful thrash metal killer songs on this
album such as "Death Trap", "Thras Attack" and "Tormentor" but I would
have loved to see them performed by the old Destruction who was so vivid the
year before. A better production is not always an improvement, especially not
back then when it only meant to tame the sound and make it sound less edgy. I
am sure the producer did his job just the way he was supposed to but I still
prefer the sound of the EP in front of this one. The music of Destruction
needs the raw power to add that little extra that makes them so special. The
songs are nevertheless great and it is easy to tell that these guys are very
talented musicians. This is yet another album that belongs to a history of
metal collection.
