If I start this review by telling you that this is a melodic death metal album you will either stop reading right away out of pure boredom or you will become really excited. It seems as if this is really a love or hate genre these days when the record labels keep signing new bands all the time. Detonation is a Dutch band who have now signed a three album deal with Osmose Productions. This was once the home of Swedish deathsters Dark Tranquillity and to tell you the truth, Detonation has a lot to thank their Swedish colleagues for. "An Epic Defiance" show clear influences from old Dark Tranquillity mixed with more modern The Haunted riffing and the extremity of Dissection. As if this wasn't enough the cover art was designed by Dark Tranquillity's own Niklas Sundin. Detonation is still a pretty young band and was formed in 1997 as a side project under the moniker Infernal Dream. The following year they changed their name and the project became more of a real band. Now they have at least three chances to show the world that they are here to stay, this being the first of them. A short summary of the album is that the exterior is very nice indeed but there is something missing in the exterior. What I mean by this is that the production, cover art and musicianship are all on a high level but Detonation need to work hard on writing more memorable songs. Also, I am not too fond of the vocals which are rather non-personal. A decent first effort from a band that could come a long way.
