REVIEW: Deviant, The - Ravenous Deathworship Tabu Recordings, 2006
7/10
Deviant, The - Ravenous Deathworship - cover art Back in 1996 the Norwegian band 122 Stabwounds released an album called "The Deity Of Perversion" via Metalion's cult label Head Not Found. Now, ten years later, several former members of the band can be found in The Deviant who have finished work on their debut album called "Ravenous Deathworship". Many Norwegian bands have strived to explore new ground in order to break away from the traditional black metal sounds and The Deviant have also chosen this path, embracing various aspects of extreme metal with open arms (carrying suitable weapons of destruction of course). This is a cake for the reaper; the ingrediences called for are black hints of Immortal and the dense riffage of Slayer whereas the guitar sound remind quite a bit of Dissection. Behind the microphone we find former Gehenna frontman Dolgar whose demonical presence mark the better black metal influence on this album. While certainly dark and sinister in its nature, "Ravenous Deathworship" is a child of at least three parents, not to be easily defined by one single genre description.

If you can call a band like The Deviant newcomers then they will most likely be considered one of the most exciting new extreme bands to leave Norwegian soil this year. Their debut is not extraordinary but they have found their own character very quickly and it is a solid piece of extreme metal recommended for fans of bands as diverse as Morbid Angel, Immortal, Dissection and Slayer. A tight, coherent, well produced and even release. Delightfully misanthropic despite one or two faus pax such as the cheesy song title "Sadosadistic".
