Devilyn is one of the leading death metal bands from Poland and also one of the oldest, having formed already in 1992 under the monicker Cerebral Concussion. Under that name they recorded a demo called "The Rule" in 1994 which is now released on cd together with other rare and unique material. To make it even more attractive to presumptive buyers a guest appearance was done by Behemoth's very own Inferno. As expected from these given conditions the sound quality of this recording is not very modern although it has been polished to make the original sound seem a little less primitive and raw. What we get to hear is rather unpolished yet very brutal Morbid Angel inspired death metal where furious drumming and smashing guitar riffs walk hand in hand with the abyssal growls of founding member Novy (who also joined Polish legends Vader during the summer). Even though this isn't the perfect way to get to know the band if you have not heard of them before it is not hard to tell that these guys were serious about their music already when they recorded their first and only demo close to ten years ago. It is tight, fast and especially the vocals from Novy are impressive. Novy's voice and his way of singing reminds me a lot of the early Morbid Angel albums but the music of Devilyn isn't quite as convincing. If you like other brutal death metal acts from Poland you will surely love what Devilyn are doing as well. Rounding off the album you will find a live cover version of the Carcass classic "Heartwork" and the included video of "Reborn In Pain" which are also worth mentioning. I am still missing that little extra from these guys though which is needed to take them from the second division of death metal bands to the elite.
