Devin Townsend has managed to create another masterpiece in his line-up of an already astonishing carrier as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. Beside his Industrial metal band Strapping Young Lad (where brutality is of the essence) Devin also has a softer and melodic side which he perfectly expressed in projects like Ocean Machine and Infinity. Terria is musically very similar to its predecessors so the fans of the older material won’t be disappointed, on the contrary they will love it. The album starts up with the mid-tempo song ‘Olives’ that continuously builds up layers further through the song Mountain. ‘Earth Day’ is a typical epic and bombastic Devin song with a message that could please the nature loving, ecological metal fans out there. Next to its message of recycling the song also has a great melody line and really kicks ass. The mixture of the typical screams and the clean high pitched vocals just underline the capability of this musical virtuoso from Canada. The album also has noticeably a great deal of acoustical and melancholic songs which have a deeper message than your average pop song or ballad. In my eyes this could be called emotional metal with true feelings but also with balls.
Throughout the album a throbbing and heavy drumming is heard and can only be explained by the fact that none other than Gene Hoglan himself is responsible for it. Devin Townsend did beside the lyrics also all the guitar parts together with keyboards and samples. The song ‘Tiny Tears’ is a perfect example of how layers of softer and louder guitar melodies and riffs are slowly built up to a bombastic ending. The mixture of gentle sounds and sad melodies with heavy pounding guitars and drums makes Terria so special and original. But as you will hear in the song ‘Earth Day’ it still remains in the end ‘just entertainment folks’. I must say this is not easy listening music, it is very complex and needs time and a few spins to get to appreciate it but ones you do you will enter an indescribable dream world. For the die hard fans there is a limited edition version of the album with extra live video footage from Japan. If you are a fan of alternative, progressive and weird metal then you should get hold of this disc together with everything else Devin Townsend has ever done.
