REVIEW: Devolved - Technologies Casket Music, 2002
6/10
Devolved - Technologies - cover art Devolved is an Australian band on the rise. The band formed back in 1996 by two men named John Sankey and Brett Noordin but it wasn't until early 1999 that they recorded their first demo. From there on the band's career began for real and now they have finished the recordings of their debut release at Brisbane's Modern Music Studio. They were also voted as the Australian metal artist of the year by 1,5 million listeners of Triple J, an Australian radio station, and also became the first extreme metal band ever to be played on Triple J Daytime radio. The expectations on this band are perhaps a little too high for their own good and the band has been hailed as the Australian answer to Fear Factory. They do actually sound very much like Fear Factory with the characteristic programmed drum patterns and death metal roots. The vocals are however a lot more death / thrash metal sounding and doesn't come close to the powerful voice of Burton C. Bell. Devolved doesn't have the same industrial edge either and sometimes it feels as if they are a death metal band who doesn't really know what they are heading for. A slightly monotonous and schizophrenic album but it still contains some rather enjoyable music. Stand-out track: "Progress".
