Florida natives Diabolic have always been a
favorite of mine. From their earliest works on "City of The Dead" to their
latest "Vengeance Ascending", they can always deliver great guitar work and
memorable songs. This, however, is my favorite of all of their 4 albums. While
bassist/vocalist Paul Ouellette delivers a somewhat generic performance,
though still quite good, the guitar dueling and collaboration of Brian Malone
and Jerry Mortellaro is what defines the Diabolic sound to me. These 2 guys
write some sinister melodies, as heard in tracks like "Extinction Level
Event" and "Necromancer of The Ancient Arts". The soloing is also
top-notch, with tons of quick tapping and dive bombing. Drummer Aantar Coates
rips his kit up with huge rolls and fast blasting, though he has some shitty
sounding triggers on their newest album. "Subterraneal Magnitude", on the
other hand, was recorded with a much more natural sound, and is a great listen
from the instrumental intro "Vassago" to the closing title track. I think
that Diabolic has earned a few more fans, as well, after having toured North
America with heavyweights Krisiun, Cryptopsy and Dimmu Borgir a while back.
While they have come under fire for being too much like Morbid Angel, I feel
that Diabolic takes a much more modern approach to the whole Florida death
metal thing, and doesn't get too pretentious with the Satan stuff. They're
probably one of the few bands that can satisfy metal fans on either side of
the Atlantic Ocean, and will only continue to improve as they work with new
label Olympic Recordings.
