REVIEW: Diabolical - Synergy Scarlet Records, 2001
7/10
Diabolical - Synergy - cover art Diabolical is a Swedish death/thrash metal band from Sundsvall in the north of the country that definitely deserves attention. They have found their own style by fusing together elements from a lot of different musical directions with amazingly technical guitarwork. After the release of their "Deserts Of Desolation" MCD on Cadla Communications, a small Swedish underground label, in the end of the year 2000 they have now been picked up by the Italian Scarlet Records to release their first full-length album. This debut release is a step forward from the MCD with a production and sound quality that is a lot better, making the music cleaner, but the style is still the same brutal death metal with beautiful melodic twists. This album includes part of the old MCD but most of the tracks are completely new songs that turn out to have even more complex arrangements than the old ones. Think At The Gates with a small black metal touch and you will know the Diabolical sound pretty well. If you´re not afraid of a little heavier yet very melodical stuff from the deadlier league of metal then be sure to check out this album in March for a positive surprise. The album was recorded and mixed at Studio Underground by P.O. Saether (Opera IX, Terror 2000, Carnal Forge etc.). The really beautiful cover artwork was done by Joe Petagno (Motörhead, Marduk, Bal Sagoth...).
