REVIEW: Diabolical Masquerade - Death´s Design Avantgarde Music, 2001
6.5/10
Diabolical Masquerade - Death´s Design - cover art What is this? A concept album? Well, more or less. “Death´s design” is the soundtrack of a film, and Diabolical Masquerade assumed this duty with courage and imagination. Their brand of black metal, however, is altered by the purpose of this album. What are the fruits of that work? Hmmm... I must admit I don´t like this album, honestly. The first thing that one can see when grabbing the album is that it has over 60 tracks!!! A listening blows away any doubt and confirms the whole thing: yes, many tracks are those annoying short synth / orchestral intros that spoil the ambience of the album totally, breaking any intent of achieving an atmosphere or a feeling, I can´t put up with it, frankly. So that on one hand, there are real “songs” with the traditional metal instruments (that, unfortunately, don´t last long enough to catch what they are trying to tell us – only two tracks on the album are longer than 2 minutes!), and on the other hand, many verminous ambient interludes that do nothing but interrupt the natural course of the album. The normal tracks are in the vein of the traditional style that Diabolical Masquerade has performed in the past, maybe with slight differences: good melodies conceived under the sign of black metal, but anyway the structures are not as always, and these songs are mostly too short: at times you don´t know which track is being played. The songs are usually put together without blank spaces in between, so that one could imagine that there aren´t 60 tracks but 15 or 20 with many tempo changes, but disregarding if you look at the track number on your player or not, there´s no consistency in the album and I think it´s uncomfortable to hear every now and then a short keyboard part that breaks the pace of the album. No, it´s not my cup of tea, really. Too twisted and varied for me, sorry!
