Third musical effort from Katatonia guitarist Anders Nyström, and in a few words I´d say it keeps on delivering melodic black metal without high pretentions, being the result a very entertaining opus. First of all, “Nightwork” has a nice cover art with a myriad of bones conforming the gloomy adorns of a cathedral or a chapel - very creepy - and when the album starts, we can listen to an enjoyable piece of music, with plenty of ambient keyboards, guitars that lead the body of the sound with its sometimes impressive melodies, and aggressive vocals. The opening track “Rider on the bonez” catches our attention quickly with those beautiful keyboard notes combined with the guitar parts, the main characteristic of the Diabolical Masquerade sound: this duality of beautiful compositions between keys and strings, that never become light-hearted nor too happy. Forget about the risk of seeming cheesy, for “Nightwork” is heavy and strong despite being melodic. The band´s style is much more mature and established than before, and so is the sound, more solid and even cleaner than in the debut album. Of course, the heavy metal tips stand in, as Blackheim seems to be very fond of that stuff... A curiosity of this album is that the fourth song “Thiz ghoultimate omen” uses with no remorse the main theme from the movie “Children of the corn” in a keyboard line (that, by the way, fits perfectly in the track, everything must be said...). If we add that the first album also had some melodies that could remind of other bands, for example Opeth, one could have some suspicious thoughts, but that´s only an impression of mine and it´s up to you to judge those similarities... Diabolical Masquerade insist on being a good melodic black metal band and, in fact, they reach their goal. Correct, well structured songs, great sound and just black metal.
