REVIEW: Dictators, The - Viva Dictators Escapi Music, 2005
7/10
Dictators, The - Viva Dictators - cover art Formed in New York City in 1974, Dictators deserve applause just because they’re still playing together, and this quintet has shared stages with legends like Ramones. On stage they are at their best with their melodic and aggressive punk rock and lyrics both dark and humourous. And they sure manage to share some of that energy with the listener on their live record ‘Viva Dictators’. Recorded at Maxwell’s in New Jersey and The Bowery Ballroom in New York, it contains 16 of their punk classics and one bonus track, recorded during soundcheck. I can almost smell the grass, beer and dirty festival visitors through my speakers, and it is impossible to sit still, you just have to dance. From the first track ‘New York, New York’ until the bonus track ‘Cars and Girls’ it is non stop punk rock at its best. This is the ultimate pre-party record. Listen to it on a Friday with some friends and a couple of beers, to get in the right mood for the party. It is not in any way a record for those who want something new and innovative. But if you want some traditional punk that gives you that ‘happy-in-the-stomach-and-just-want-to-do-the-pogo’ feeling this is a record that you will love.
