Put on your seatbelts and ready yourself for a ride that will shake you back and forth, up and down, side to side and everything inbetween. Once you are sure that you can anticipate the next twist or turn another path is chosen and your attempt at guessing is proven futile. Die Apokalyptischen Reiter can be accused of many things but they are definitely not predictable. "Samurai", the German maniacs' 5th studio album, follows the same direction as their previous one which is every and none at the same time. If there is any music that is suitably compared to a roller-coaster ride then this is it. Influences ranging from the malevolent black metal of "Der Teufel" and groovy death metal in "Eruption" meet the traditional folk music of "Reitermaniacs" and the reggae rhythms of "Lazy Day". This is a band that defies all attempts of labeling although many of their songs are built on a foundation rooted in punk, hardcore and death metal but there are so many other elements to be explored in their music that it's hard to keep track of everything. The title may imply influences from East Asian music but you will have to look hard for such until reaching "Hey-Ho" where there are at least some traces to be found. Die Apokalyptischen Reiter sounds like everything and nothing you have ever heard before. "Samurai" is a solid album and recommended to those who are looking for a place where creativity and quality are found at once and can tolerate German lyrics. Favorite picks: "Wahnsinn", "Eruption", "Reitermaniacs", "Per Aspera Ad Astra".
