According to the press release, "Knives of Ice sets a new standard for unrestrained musicianship that exposes the listener to a myriad of slithery Tetris-defeating rhythms, violent flurries of spitfire blast-beats, exotic, pyramid-melting leads, and infectious vocal lacerations. These elements combine to create an original, fluid songwriting style that actually means something and isn't afraid to flirt with some seriously skullcrushing slap-dash grooves." Yes, I suppose this could be considered the truth. Perhaps most famous for having members of Ripping Corpse, Dim Mak now also includes drummer du jour John Longstreth (Skinless, Origin, Angelcorpse, etc.). On their latest release, and Willowtip debut, the band finds themselves mining material familiar and consistent to bands already on Willowtip Records. That is to say an excellent blend of Death Metal, Grindcore, and Math Metal abounds like so many other Willowtip bands, though this is no Crowpath. Riffs are all over the place at once and the over triggered drumming matches its frenetic pace. "Devil Finding Mirror" is perhaps the catchiest song offered here, what with its "Liar, liar, set your soul on fire" chorus repeated often to maximum effect. The melodic changeup in the latter stages of "Weakener" is also quite memorable. Knives of Ice is a solid release that should appeal to fans of Technical Death Metal and of the Willowtip label in general. Jason Tipton has done himself proud yet again. Tip your cap to him and Dim Mak. In a word: unrelenting.
