REVIEW: Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant Nuclear Blast, 1997
9/10
Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant - cover art Dimmu Borgir were already pretty far into their musical career when this album was released in 1997 but they had still not been presented to the many fans who would buy their albums in the late 90s. "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" is the album that brought the band out of an obscure presence in more traditional black metal circles to more of a mainstream metal crowd. This was mainly a result of their deal with the German metal giant Nuclear Blast but of course also because of the song material included on the disc. Dimmu Borgir are despised by many a black metal purist due to their, according to them, untrue musical adventures with symphonic keyboard arrangements and a more commercial attitude. No matter what you think of this Dimmu Borgir made a real breakthrough here and a couple of the best songs ever penned by the band appear. First we have the opening track "Mourning Palace" which should be well-known to most fans of extreme metal. It has grown to become a real classic by now and the atmospheric keyboards combined with an irresistable melody line will stay with us forever. Dimmu Borgir have always been featuring some of the most talented musicians from the Norwegian black metal scene and they make it no secret that they have been inspired by the old classic hard rock and heavy metal bands of the 80s. While many of the first generation bands were rooted in early death metal Dimmu Borgir found a way to make black metal more accessible and suited for mainstream publicity by adding influences and elements from many other genres such as heavy and thrash metal as well as classical music. If the wonderful melodies of "Mourning Palace" don't grab you then maybe the powerful mixture of sharp guitar riffs and bombastic keyboards in "Tormentor Of Christian Souls" will. These two tracks are definitely among the crown jewels in the Dimmu Borgir treasure and "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" easily stands as one of the most important releases in the second wave of Norwegian black metal. Essential to any metal collector as well as fans of good music in general.
