REVIEW: Disbelief - Spreading The Rage Massacre Records, 2003
9/10
Disbelief - Spreading The Rage - cover art Not having heard any of their music previously, I didn't really know what to expect. The opening song was pretty slow out of the gate, but the chorus immediately cuaght my attention. The rhythm guitar blasted a semi-hypnotic riff while the lead guitar played something close to more recent Sentenced. The blend of emotional and repetition-driven guitar work with death metal vocals is refreshing and powerful. While the song structure is atypical for the most part, running in circles a little too often on a few occacions, the song length is generally well-chosen. Short enough to keep your attention and appreciation for the often catchy melodies, but long enough to give the listener an excellent feel for the mood. "Addiction" is a particularly interesting song. After kicking you in the balls with the extremely heavy verse, they ease you into a more melodic chorus before returning the bone-crunching verse. If it wasn't already enough of a transition, they throw in a country-rock / blues inspired guitar solo. Yet it doesn't feel out of place, which is something that should be duly commended. This band is obviously talented and has incredible potential, of which this album is a near complete manifestation of. Just FYI, in my opinion, "Democracy" is the best song on this album. One sentence review: Go out and get this one... now!
