Expect nothing but
the most brutal and extreme death metal existing in this world when inserting
this disc in your cd player. The German band Disbelief is back again although
the band was very close to a split-up after their second album when vocalist
Karsten Jäger and guitarist Tommy Fritsch left the band. Karsten came back to
the band though and Tommy has now been replaced by Jan-Dirk Löffler who seems
to be a talented player as well. This is definitely a band in the harsher
league of death metal alongside acts like Hypocrisy and Bolt Thrower. Their
music is heavy as hell but that doesn´t mean that it is lacking melody.
Combine the monstrous vocals of Hypocrisy with the modern gothic groove of
bands like Katatonia and Lacuna Coil and you will be pretty close to the sound
Disbelief has set out to explore. It is heavy, it is thick but it sounds real
good. This is no doubt a very talented and promising band but I would not say
that they are as astonishingly excellent as magazines like Rock Hard (9,5 out
of 10) or Legacy (15 out of 15) would want you to think. However, since it is
a German band you might expect these magazines to be a little overly
supportive. The dark melancholic atmosphere and beautiful subtle melodies
together with the tormented vocals makes this an album worth buying and
death/gothic metal fans should enjoy this one. "Worst Enemy" was produced by
Andy Classen (Rykers, Richthofen...) and the scary but somewhat naive cover
artwork was done by none other than Thomas Ewerhard. The German death metal
scene is still alive!
